What is Twitter about?

A consequence of the ease and immediacy of digital communication is that public shaming - a social control mechanism once exerted through gossip (chismis) – now has a greater relevance, bigger role, and wider scope in today’s society. Focusing on selected instances of public shaming conducted by Filipinos on Twitter, the topic is explored through the lens of sikolohiyang Filipino, in particular the concepts of hiya and kapwa; reintegrative shaming (Braithwaite, 1989); and gossip theory.
