In April of 2016, the SEC began an enforcement action against Michelle Cochran, a Texas-based CPA, for alleged violations of federal accounting regulations. The SEC brought this action before its home court, where the agency acts as both prosecutor and judge. From the start, Ms. Cochran has denied the government’s allegations, but she also challenges the constitutionality of the agency’s in-house courts. More than six years later, her case drags on.
