A free jet floatation column gives good selectivity and high separation efficiency in treating fine and ultra-fine coal. Test results of coal desulfurization with free jet flotation column are reported in this paper. The results indicate that when the coal sample from Zhong Liang Shan was processed with a Free Jet Flotation Column its pyritic sulfur content was reduced from 3.08% to 0.84%, with 72.22% recovery of combustible matter in clean coal. The concept of a desulfurization efficiency index Eds for comprehensive evaluation of the desulfurization process is proposed, which is defined as the product of the ratio of sulfur content reduction and combustible matter recovery derived from clean coal.
