What is No treatment for cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients about?

## No treatment for cryptosporidiosis in AIDS patients To the Editor: This letter is in response to the article, "Bronchial and gastrointestinal cryptosporidiosis in AIDS," (JAOA 1989;89:195-197). The authors suggest that current drug therapy-spiramycin and erythromycin-produces symptomatic improvement in 50% of patients. However, this improvement occurs in the pediatric, rather than in the AIDS, population. Currently, no effective treatment for Cryptosporidium infection in AIDS patients exists. The authors mention oral spiramycin as a useful treatment; this agent is not well absorbed and has not been effective in experiments involving AIDS patients with Cryptosporidium infection. Perhaps an effective treatment will emerge from new, upcoming trials that will analyze the efficacy of IV spiramycin, somatostantin analog, deferoxamine (DFOM), and the bovine transfer factor.
