What is SDS-PAGE: Protein Separation Technique about?
SDS-PAGE is a technique used to separate proteins by size using gel electrophoresis. Proteins are denatured and given a negative charge by mixing with SDS detergent. They are then loaded into wells in an acrylamide gel and separated as they migrate through the gel when an electric current is applied. Smaller proteins travel farther than larger ones. The gel can then be stained to visualize the separated protein bands. SDS-PAGE allows analysis of protein purity and determination of molecular weights.
