Avalanches are masses of snow, ice, and rocks that fall rapidly down a mountainside and can be deadly. Humans trigger 90% of avalanches, with as many as 40 deaths in North America each year. The three deadliest avalanches in history include the 1970 Huascarán-Ancash avalanche in Peru that killed 20,000 people after an earthquake, the 1962 Huascaran avalanche in Peru that killed 4,000 people, and the 1916 White Friday avalanches in Italy that killed 10,000 soldiers during World War I.
