Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation of the Earth from 1519-1522. Although Magellan was killed in the Philippines, one of his ships completed the voyage returning to Spain and proving the Earth was circumnavigable. Magellan was Portuguese but led the expedition for Spain after Portugal refused to support his proposed route to the Spice Islands. The expedition featured sailors from multiple countries and encountered many hardships but ultimately proved the viability of sailing around the world.
