The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) program was launched in 2000 to provide all-weather road connectivity to rural areas of India. It aims to connect habitations with populations over 500 in plains and 250 in hilly areas. Over 1.67 lakh habitations are eligible for the program which would construct over 3.71 lakh km of new roads and upgrade 3.68 lakh km of existing roads. The Bharat Nirman program further expanded the goals to connect all habitations with over 1000 people by constructing 1.46 lakh
