What is Role of Electroactive Biofilms in Governing the Performance of Microbial Electrochemical System about?
The world is looking hopefully toward research community for an interdisciplinary solution that can target the problem of wastewater management. Several successful technologies like up-flow anaerobic sludge bioreactor (UASB), moving bed bioreactor (MBR), etc., have been up-scaled from lab to field and have secured their respective places in the sewage treatment plant (STP). These technologies are efficient but consume a large amount of time for the treatment process . The most uncontrolled parameter of sewage wastewater is its uneven strength which adversely affects the efficacy of such technologies. The by-product like methane gas, produced after treatment of sewage or sludge, is a raw form of energy which cannot be used directly as a source for external applications. Microbial electrochemical system (MES) is a recently developed technology based on the microbial activity and has a great potential to overcome the above-stated limitations. The microbes involved in this system exhibit a unique "electrochemical" property, an ability to exchange electrons from their cell wall with the electrodes. These microbes are called "electroactive microbes" and tend to form electroactive biofilm
