What is Dextrose Use, Indications, and Risks about?

Dextrose solutions in 10%, 25%, and 50% concentrations are used to treat hypoglycemia and altered mental status by raising blood glucose levels. Dextrose works by providing glucose which is used by the body for energy and regulated by insulin. It can be given IV to unconscious patients or those with neurologic deficits when hypoglycemia is suspected. Care must be taken to avoid extravasation which can cause tissue damage. Blood glucose should be checked before and after administration.
