What is Christopher Ricks. Along Heroic Lines about?
Christopher Ricks's first volume of essays since Allusion to the Poets (2002), Along Heroic Lines is his first critical book since 2015's revelatory edition of T. S. Eliot's poetry, co-edited with Jim McCue. Eliot features again here, as the subject of two essays and a point of reference throughout, and other continuities are apparent: John Dryden, Geoffrey Hill, Samuel Beckett and Samuel Johnson are, as elsewhere in Ricks's work, accorded individual chapters. Other elements are new departures: two of the longest studies are of Henry James; Norman Mailer, and Carmen Bugan, the Romanian-born author of Burying the Typewriter (2012) and Releasing the Porcelain Birds (2016), are given extended attention. So does the early twentieth-century American essayist, John Jay Chapman. Ricks, despite his already exceptional range, has not ceased from exploration.Gathered from various sources, some of them occasional or commissioned, the essays could sink into an anthology ('Late Essays') or into a miscellany given superficial cohesion by a broad title. The Force of Poetry (1984) seemed a catch-all. 'Along Heroic Lines' might, likewise, appear just a punning means of bringing together discussion
