What is Scintillator Halo-Detector for Beam Monitoring about?

The document describes a scintillator-based halo detector system developed for online beam position monitoring of carbon ion beams used for cancer therapy. The system includes 4 scintillator paddles that can each be positioned individually using stepping motors to detect 0.1-1% of particles from the beam halo. This allows the beam center, width, and intensity to be deduced in a nondestructive way. A first test with one paddle showed count rates agreed well with measurements from a multi-wire proportional ch
