Trichuris trichiura, also known as whipworm, infects 795 million people worldwide, causing an estimated 60,000 annual deaths. The adult worms live in the caecum and colon, where the females lay thousands of eggs per day that are passed in stool. When ingested, the eggs hatch and larvae penetrate the intestinal wall, maturing into adults over 1-2 months. Heavy infections can cause abdominal pain, dysentery, and growth retardation.
