Guy Fawkes Night commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, 1605. Guy Fawkes, age 35, led the plot to blow up the English Parliament using barrels of gunpowder hidden beneath it. However, one of the conspirators sent a warning letter to King James I, and Guy Fawkes was caught guarding the explosives, leading to the discovery of the plot. Today in Great Britain, the failed plot is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks, and foods cooked over open flames.
