This document describes the synthesis of methylal from methanol and formaldehyde using Brønsted acid ionic liquids with different alkyl groups as catalysts. Various ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized. Their Brønsted acidities and catalytic performances for methylal synthesis were evaluated. The ionic liquid with a hexyl group, [C6ImBS]HSO4, exhibited the best catalytic activity due to its strong acidity and low viscosity.
