What is Gregor Mendel: Father of Genetics about?

Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian monk born in 1822 in Austria who is considered the father of genetics. Through experiments breeding pea plants in the 1850s, Mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity, including that traits are passed from parents to offspring through discrete units (now known as genes) and can be dominant or recessive. His work established the foundations of modern genetics but was not widely recognized until after his death in 1884 at age 61.
