Rizal returned to the Philippines in 1887 after 5 years abroad to practice medicine. He faced persecution from enemies of his novel Noli Me Tangere. Rizal investigated grievances of tenants on a Dominican-owned estate which angered friars. He was warned his life was in danger and compelled to leave Calamba again for his safety and to continue advocating for reforms from abroad.
