Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941 in an attempt to cripple the United States Pacific fleet and keep America from interfering with its military actions in Asia and the Pacific. The attack killed over 2,400 Americans and destroyed or damaged numerous U.S. ships and planes. The attack had the effect of bringing the United States fully into World War II on the side of the Allies against the Axis powers led by Germany, Italy and Japan.
