We sought to assess the changes in precardiac venous flowpatterns in fetuses with hypoplastic left heart (HLH) and restrictive interatrial communication. Material & Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with prenatal diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart in our tertiary referral centre. Patients were subdivided into two groups based on status of interatrial communication: Fetuses with intact or an interatrial communication less than 2 mm by colour flow mapping or B-mode echocardiography were designated group 1. Patients with an interatrial communication more than 2 mm were subsumed into group 2. The pulmonary vein-and Ductus venosus -doppler wave-form were analyzed based on the pulsatility index for veins (PIV) and peakvelocity index for veins (PVIV) at the day of diagnosis and the last examination in pregnancy. Results: 12 patients were included. Six had atrial restriction (group 1), six had unimpaired interatrial communication (group 2). In group 1 no changes in the precardiac venous flow patterns could be observed. In group 2 there was a trend for decreasing pulsatility in the precardiac veins during the course of pregnancy.
