What is Standards for Digital Health about?
No diabetes technology can be successful in a standalone manner. Any tech that cannot integrate and interoperate widely with patient-facing devices, applications, and professional-facing solutions (e.g., electronic health records [EHRs]) will have significantly lower overall value to patients and their care providers. ## G When building future devices or apps or upgrading existing ones, it may be hard to choose the best standards. For patient-facing tech, our advice is to target Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR s ), 4.0 application programming interfaces (APIs), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 11073 device taxonomies. There are many standards and taxonomies to choose from, but a "FHIR-first" strategy is a good one to start with for connectivity decisions. For professional-facing tech that needs to connect to EHRs or other institutional software, targeting Health Level 7 (HL7) v2.x (HL7 2.x) first and then FHIR 4 is a good approach.
